Barnstable County ranked 7th in state for resident earnings in 2017


Barnstable County ranked 7th among counties in Massachusetts by annual earnings per resident, according to data obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau in August.

The median income of Barnstable County residents was an inflation-adjusted $32,506 per year. Barnstable County had 95,011 households in 2017, with a population of 213,900.

The county with the highest median resident income in the state was Norfolk County. Norfolk County's median income was $42,889 per year after adjusting for inflation – $10,383 more than Barnstable County. It had 262,324 households in 2017 and a population of 694,389.

Hampshire County had the lowest annual resident income among counties in Massachusetts, with a median income of only $25,761 per year. That was $6,745 less than the median income in Barnstable County at the time. Hampshire County had 58,782 households in 2017 and a population of 161,197.
