Essex County ranked 6th in state for resident earnings in 2017


Essex County ranked 6th among counties in Massachusetts by annual earnings per resident, according to data obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau in August.

The median income of Essex County residents was an inflation-adjusted $33,114 per year. Essex County had 291,659 households in 2017, with a population of 775,860.

The county with the highest median resident income in the state was Norfolk County. Norfolk County's median income was $42,889 per year after adjusting for inflation – $9,775 more than Essex County. It had 262,324 households in 2017 and a population of 694,389.

Hampshire County had the lowest annual resident income among counties in Massachusetts, with a median income of only $25,761 per year. That was $7,353 less than the median income in Essex County at the time. Hampshire County had 58,782 households in 2017 and a population of 161,197.
