ALKU issued the following announcement on Jan. 31.

January is National Mentoring Month and the ALKrew has been celebrating all month long!

National Mentoring Month is the largest-scale mentoring campaign nationwide, working to bring attention to the importance of youth mentoring.

Throughout the year, ALKU supports the mentoring cause, both internally and externally. Internally, ALKU runs an internship program, most recently our Winternship program this December-January. Established ALKrew employees who are looking to get more involved in ALKU’s mentoring cause work as mentors to our Winter Interns—typically college-aged students on break from school. This opportunity allows the interns to have someone guiding them and supporting them during their internship experience. We celebrated this during National Mentoring Month by sharing some of our mentors’ stories on the LifeAtALKU YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRG4FJv1ip1teeKnPKmFBYQ), as well as the Facebook (LifeAtALKU) and Instagram & Snapchat (@LifeAtALKU). Check it out!

Externally, ALKU works alongside Mass Mentoring Partnership (MMP) to raise funds and awareness for the youth mentoring cause here in Massachusetts, as well as Virginia Mentoring Partnerships’ BEST Kids. We do this through our ALKU Scholarship Program, a $20,000 scholarship awarded to a local high school senior to be used over four years at any college or university. We just recently awarded our fourth recipient in November 2018 and will be opening up our fifth Scholarship in Spring 2019! Additionally, we raise funds for MMP through the Rodman Ride for Kids every year.

ALKrew members participate in the mentoring cause in their own ways as well, with Becca Crossley and Samantha Melchiorri fundraising and running the Boston Marathon for MMP, Lauren Pacella fundraising and running the Falmouth Road Race for MMP, and Dave Tuell and Steph Heyner participating in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. Just this month we did the 50/50 raffle at the Boston Celtics game benefitting MMP, and in the upcoming months we have our Bowl-A-Strike Night for the Family Services of Lawrence, and our Junior Achievement partnership where ALKrew members lead classes at the Lawrence Boys and Girls Club! It’s always a great time when the ALKrew can get together and help support the mentoring cause, whether inside the office or out.

MENTOR, the National Mentoring Partnership, puts it best: “Mentoring, at its core, guarantees young people that there is someone who cares about them, assures them they are not alone in dealing with day-to-day challenges, and makes them feel like they matter…Ultimately, mentoring connects a young person to personal growth and development and social and economic opportunity.” The ALKRew is happy to celebrate mentoring during National Mentoring Month, as well as all throughout the year!
